Truro Bearcats Edge Western Capitals in Tight Playoff Race
The Truro Bearcats claimed a vital victory over the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals with a score of 2-1 on February 19, 2024. This win brought the Bearcats within four points of the Capitals in the race for both the Eastlink South Division title and the overall standings in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
The Bearcats now hold a record of 29-13-3-1, while the Capitals lead the league with a record of 29-11-5-1. Despite their impressive goal tally of 214, the Capitals have struggled recently, suffering five consecutive losses against playoff teams in the Eastlink South Division. In those matches, they failed to score more than two goals, raising concerns about their performance heading into the latter part of the season.
The Capitals’ last victory against a playoff team occurred on January 17, when they narrowly defeated the Pictou County Crushers 3-2 at home. In their last ten games, the Capitals have a record of 5-4-1-0, with four of those victories coming against teams not in playoff contention.
Upcoming Challenges for the Capitals
Looking ahead, the Capitals will face the Chaleur Lightning, who currently have a record of 26-17-2-1, on February 21. The game will take place at the Island Petroleum Energy Centre at 19:00. This matchup is crucial for the Capitals as they aim to end a two-game losing streak. The game will also feature the Capitals’ first Alumni Game, scheduled for 16:30.
During the recent game against the Bearcats, held in Truro, Nova Scotia, Jake Todd scored the decisive goal at 12:08 of the third period, breaking a 1-1 tie. Callum Aucoin had opened the scoring for the Bearcats in the first period, while Matt MacLean replied for the Capitals with an unassisted goal in the second period. Overall, the Capitals outshot the Bearcats 24-21, but Sam Berthiaume’s performance in goal secured the win for Truro. Kolton Bourret played for the Capitals, and both teams struggled on the power play, with the Bearcats going 0-for-3 and the Capitals 0-for-2.
As the playoffs approach, the pressure mounts for the Capitals to regain their winning form against stronger opponents. With the standings tightening, each game becomes increasingly critical for their title aspirations. The Capitals will need to address their scoring difficulties in order to solidify their position as a top contender in the league.
