Tulane’s Jake Retzlaff Leads Late Comeback to Beat Army 24-17
In a thrilling finish, Jake Retzlaff threw two touchdown passes within the final two minutes, leading Tulane to a 24-17 victory over Army on October 14, 2023, in New Orleans. The decisive score came from a 26-yard connection to Shazz Preston with just 27 seconds remaining on the clock.
Tulane was behind 17-10 when they orchestrated a crucial drive that began with just under two minutes left. The Green Wave executed an impressive 11-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a 12-yard touchdown reception by Bryce Bohanon on a fourth-and-8 situation to tie the game at 17-all.
Last-Minute Heroics
After a quick three-and-out by Army, Retzlaff took charge. He completed four passes and added a 10-yard run during the final drive, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. His game-winning pass to Preston was tightly contested; the Army defensive back managed to deflect the ball, but Preston managed to bobble it before securing the catch in the end zone.
With time winding down, Army attempted to respond. They advanced to a position to throw into the end zone, but Tulane’s defense effectively batted the pass down, sealing the victory.
Player Performances
Retzlaff had an impressive performance overall, completing 22 of 29 passes for a total of 261 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He also contributed significantly on the ground, carrying the ball eight times for 62 yards and an additional touchdown. Preston finished the game with five receptions for 86 yards, proving to be a key target in crucial moments.
On the opposing side, Cale Hellums was a standout for Army, rushing 39 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 125 yards. Brady Anderson supported the offense with four catches for 97 yards. Despite their strong performance, Army fell to a record of 3-4, with a 2-3 conference standing.
This victory improves Tulane’s record to 6-1, maintaining their momentum in the American Athletic Conference with a 3-0 record. The Green Wave will look to build on this crucial win as they continue their season.
