UCLA’s Tyler Bilodeau Injured in Thrilling Win Over Michigan State
UCLA star forward Tyler Bilodeau is expected to miss at least one game following a right leg injury sustained during the Bruins’ thrilling 88-84 victory over the No. 8 Michigan State Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on March 8, 2024. The injury occurred late in the first half, raising concerns about Bilodeau’s availability for the upcoming semifinal match against the No. 18 Purdue Boilermakers.
Head coach Mick Cronin provided an update on Bilodeau’s condition, indicating that it would take “literally a miracle” for him to participate in Saturday’s game. Cronin expressed optimism that the injury may be a sprain rather than something more serious, but the exact nature and duration of Bilodeau’s absence remain uncertain. “My concern is for him, for him,” Cronin said. “If I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all, my friend, since I’ve been at UCLA with injuries. It could have cost us the national championship. We lost two NBA players in March three years ago.”
Bilodeau, who is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, was performing well before the injury, contributing five points within just ten minutes of play. His injury occurred as he attempted to defend against Carson Cooper. The incident was non-contact, with Bilodeau’s leg buckling during an awkward landing, prompting immediate concern from teammates and fans alike.
Teammate Trent Perry shared his reactions following the injury, stating, “My initial reaction, I just really prayed that he was OK, and I’m glad that he’s OK. Again, like I said, it’s a team effort. We had guys step up.” This sentiment reflects the camaraderie and resilience within the UCLA squad as they prepare for their next challenge without their star player.
As the Bruins advance in the tournament, the impact of Bilodeau’s absence could be significant. His performance has been instrumental in UCLA’s success this season, and the team will need to rally around one another to fill the gap left by their leading player. The upcoming semifinal against Purdue will be a test of their depth and determination.
UCLA fans and basketball enthusiasts alike will be watching closely for updates regarding Bilodeau’s recovery and the team’s performance in the high-stakes tournament. The Bruins are determined to continue their pursuit of a championship, but they will be doing so with the hope of Bilodeau’s swift return to the court.
