USMNT 2026 World Cup Roster Takes Shape Ahead of Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is rapidly approaching, prompting the United States men’s national team (USMNT) to solidify its roster. The recent Gold Cup showcased numerous player absences, allowing several newcomers to make their case for a spot on the squad. Some players took advantage of the opportunity, while others may have diminished their chances of making the final cut. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino faces the challenge of evaluating a fluctuating player pool, but the return of key players signals a promising recovery.
Goalkeepers and Defensive Lineup
In the goalkeeper competition, Matt Turner has returned to Major League Soccer (MLS) after a stint in Europe, seeking consistent playing time with New England Revolution. Turner brings invaluable World Cup experience, but he must perform at a high level to reclaim his starting position. Jon Freese made a strong impression during the Gold Cup, notably winning a penalty shootout against Keylor Navas. Yet, he must address defensive lapses to secure his place.
Another contender, Zack Steffen, missed the Gold Cup due to a knee injury, which remains a concern for his continued selection. He has shown promise in league play, ranking third in goals prevented in just 14 matches, demonstrating his potential when fit.
The center-back position has been invigorated by the performance of Chris Richards, who emerged as a standout during the Gold Cup. Alongside him, Tim Ream has provided leadership despite his age, but questions linger about his long-term viability. Mark McKenzie, Carter-Vickers, and Antonee Robinson are also in consideration, each needing to enhance their form to challenge for starting roles.
Midfield and Forward Dynamics
Midfielders are led by Tyler Adams, who is critical to the team’s success. His recent foot injury raises concerns, but when fit, he is expected to be a key player. Weston McKennie remains a vital asset, yet he must prove his value after inconsistent performances.
Newcomer Cardoso has struggled to translate his club success to international play, while De la Torre displayed promising potential at the Gold Cup. Young player Tessmann is also in the mix, needing to elevate his game to make the final roster.
On the attacking front, Christian Pulisic remains a central figure, though his relationship with Pochettino requires mending following previous tensions. Tim Weah adds much-needed speed to the lineup, while Malik Tillman is taking strides at the club level with his move to Bayer Leverkusen.
The forward position includes Folarin Balogun, who has yet to play for the USMNT this year due to injury but remains a leading candidate. Ricardo Pepi is looking to capitalize on playing time at PSV Eindhoven, while Josh Sargent seeks to regain his scoring touch after a long drought.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the competition for spots on the roster intensifies. Players who can demonstrate their capabilities at the club level will have the best chance to make the final cut. With Pochettino at the helm, the USMNT is looking to field a competitive team when the tournament kicks off in less than a year.
