The Victoria Grizzlies staged a remarkable comeback on Saturday night, defeating the Cowichan Valley Capitals 8-7 in an exhilarating overtime match. This victory came just two days after a disappointing 11-2 loss to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, showcasing the Grizzlies’ resilience against the league leaders.

The intense rivalry between the two teams unfolded with a series of lead changes, as Victoria managed to recover from five separate deficits throughout the game. Owen Warnick emerged as the hero, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime, making it the first British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) match this season to reach a total of 15 goals.

Grizzlies’ Offensive Resurgence

Following the heavy defeat earlier in the week, Grizzlies President David Michaud challenged his players to demonstrate their commitment. He stated, “After the 11-2 loss, we really challenged the players to show they’re in the fight, and if they didn’t want to be in it, there would be no hard feelings, and we would find a new home for those players.” Michaud praised the team for their determination, especially considering they played short-handed due to injuries.

Victoria’s offensive capabilities were evident, as they have maintained a strong scoring presence throughout the season, with only three teams surpassing their total of 124 goals across 31 games. Warnick’s outstanding performance included two goals and two assists, while teammate Artur Gross contributed one goal and three assists. Captain Landon Mackie also added a goal and an assist to the scoreboard.

Gross’s impressive contributions have not gone unnoticed; he now has 27 points in just 20 games, ranking tenth in the BCHL for points-per-game. Michaud highlighted Gross’s journey, stating, “For Artur to join the team late, not speak the language, live in a new country, and play the way he has played has been impressive.”

Another standout was 16-year-old Eddy Spytz, who achieved his first multi-point game with two assists. Michaud expressed enthusiasm for Spytz’s progress: “Eddy has done everything we’ve asked of him since joining the team… We’re really excited to see Eddy continue his progression.”

Physical Encounter and League Standings

The match was marked by physicality, with the Grizzlies and Capitals accumulating a combined total of 38 penalty minutes. A notable moment included a fight between Cowichan’s Massimo Fazio and Victoria’s Michael Dowdall late in the first period. Victoria currently holds the position of the second-most penalized team in the BCHL, with a total of 555 minutes in penalties this season.

With this victory, the Grizzlies improved their record to 15-15-1-0, placing them fourth in the Coastal West Division and seventh in the Coastal Conference. The Capitals, despite the loss, remain at the top of the BCHL standings with a record of 24-7-2-0.

The two teams are set to face each other three more times this season, with matches scheduled for January 24 and March 14 in Cowichan, and February 28 in Colwood. With the intensity of this recent encounter, fans can anticipate further thrilling matchups ahead.
