Vikings QB Carson Wentz Undergoes Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

The Minnesota Vikings have placed quarterback Carson Wentz on injured reserve following the decision for him to undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. This development comes after Wentz played through the injury during the last two and a half games of his role as a fill-in for J.J. McCarthy. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, the team had not publicly announced the surgery details as of Monday.

Wentz’s injury occurred during a challenging game against the Cleveland Browns on October 5, 2023, in London. During that match, Wentz faced intense pressure as he operated behind a makeshift offensive line, missing key players such as starting tackles Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill, along with original starting center Ryan Kelly. Despite the pain, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell opted to keep Wentz in the game, believing that he was not at risk of further damage according to medical staff advice.

In his five games with the Vikings, Wentz led the team to a 2-3 record, including a significant defeat against the Los Angeles Chargers with a score of 37-10. The quarterback’s journey in Minnesota marked his sixth team start since entering the league, extending a record that saw him start for multiple franchises since being drafted second overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016.

As Wentz prepares for surgery, J.J. McCarthy is expected to return to the starting position this week, having recovered from a high ankle sprain sustained during the second game of the season. The struggling Vikings, currently sitting at a 3-4 record, are looking to improve their fortunes as they head into a crucial matchup against division rival Detroit.

To fill the roster spot vacated by Wentz, the Vikings claimed tight end Ben Sims off waivers from the Green Bay Packers. This move comes as the team looks to bolster its lineup, especially following injuries that have affected key positions, including the loss of tight end Josh Oliver, who exited the last game with a foot injury.

With Wentz’s surgery set to take place, the Vikings will need to rally as they navigate the remainder of the season without their veteran quarterback. The upcoming games will be critical for the team as they strive to regain momentum and keep their playoff hopes alive.
