Vinzenz Rohrer Surprised by Early Cut from Canadiens Training Camp

The Montreal Canadiens have made the decision to send young prospect Vinzenz Rohrer back to Switzerland, surprising many observers and the player himself. Drafted in the third round, 75th overall, in 2022, Rohrer had entered his first NHL training camp with high hopes after developing his skills with the Zurich Lions in the Swiss league.
Rohrer impressed throughout the camp, showcasing his potential and drawing attention as a candidate to start the season with the Canadiens. Despite his strong performance, the team opted to return him to Zurich a week before the camp concluded, leaving Rohrer reflecting on the unexpected cut.
Rohrer’s Perspective on the Canadiens Decision
In an interview with Maximilian Girschele of LAOLA1, Rohrer expressed his surprise at the timing of his return. “I didn’t expect to be cut back so soon,” he said. He acknowledged that while he would have preferred to remain in Montreal longer to gain valuable experience, he was not disheartened about returning to Switzerland.
“They told me I had a good camp and left a good impression, but they want to see me progress further. There’s no hurry; I’ve only just turned 21,” Rohrer explained. This perspective aligns with the Canadiens’ long-term strategy regarding player development.
The organization views Rohrer as part of their future plans, preferring he continue to develop in the Swiss league before considering a transition to North America, whether with Montreal or their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.
Future Prospects and Comparisons
Rohrer, who celebrated his 21st birthday on September 9, 2025, remains an intriguing prospect for the Canadiens. Known for his energetic playing style, he has drawn comparisons to veteran forward Brendan Gallagher. Some analysts speculate he could someday fill Gallagher’s role as the latter nears the end of his contract.
While Rohrer has yet to score in four games since rejoining the Zurich Lions, his potential continues to draw attention from hockey commentators and fans alike. As the Canadiens aim to refine their roster for the upcoming season, the decision to send Rohrer back to Switzerland reflects their commitment to careful player development.
The Canadiens’ choice highlights the importance of nurturing young talent, ensuring that prospects like Rohrer are well-prepared before making the leap to the NHL. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Rohrer’s development in Switzerland, as he seeks to cement his place in professional hockey and potentially return to North America as a stronger player.
