Wilmington Wildcats Aim for Playoffs Without All-Time Rushing Leader
The Wilmington Wildcats are gearing up for the 2025 football season with high hopes for another playoff run, though they will do so without their all-time leading rusher, Kyle Farrell. Under the leadership of head coach Jeff Reents, who enters his 32nd season with a career record of 285-65, the Wildcats aim for their 29th consecutive playoff appearance following a strong 2024 season that concluded with a 12-1 record.
Wilmington’s impressive track record includes four state final appearances and three championships. Last season, they dominated the Illinois Central Eight Conference with a perfect 7-0 record but fell to the eventual Class 3A State champion, Montini, in the semifinals. The Wildcats are optimistic as they prepare for the upcoming season, which begins with the first practice on August 11, 2025.
The program has witnessed significant growth, with Reents noting that summer attendance was exceptionally high. “The attendance board was full all summer, and that’s half the battle,” he said. With approximately 88 or 89 players participating, Reents is excited about the potential this season holds.
Replacing Kyle Farrell, who accumulated a remarkable 4,533 rushing yards during his career, will be a challenge. However, senior Ryan Kettman, who was the team’s leading rusher last season with 1,431 yards and earned an honorable mention on the Class 3A All-State team, is set to take on a larger role. Reents mentioned that several players, including seniors Nate Cupples and Jay Nevels along with sophomore Hunter Kaitschuck, are in contention to help fill this void.
On the offensive front, the Wildcats benefit from a robust blocking unit that remains largely intact. Key players include juniors Jack Cutter and Will Wilson, along with seniors Logan Van Duyne and Zach Ohlund, who have substantial experience on the line. The defensive side faces a challenge with the departure of Ryan Nelson, an All-ICE tight end/linebacker. Nonetheless, Ohlund, who recorded 16 tackles for loss last season, returns to anchor a defense that boasts eight returning starters. Senior defensive back Billy Moore and promising juniors Nash Rink and Cooper Holman are also expected to play pivotal roles.
The Wildcats’ aspirations for further playoff success and another shot at the state championship are well within reach. Reents emphasizes the importance of focusing on their process and enjoying the game. “My biggest thing is to have a lot of fun,” he stated, highlighting the need for players to embrace the journey. As the season unfolds, Wilmington aims to maintain the winning standard they have established over the years, setting their sights on a successful campaign in 2025.
