Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have committed to resolving longstanding border disputes and enhancing cooperation during a significant meeting ahead of a regional summit in Tianjin. This marks Mr. Modi’s first visit to China since relations soured following deadly border clashes between Chinese and Indian soldiers in 2020. His trip is part of India’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a regional political, economic, and security group founded by China.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Modi expressed optimism about the relationship, stating that it has moved in “a meaningful direction.” He noted, “There is a peaceful environment at the borders after disengagement.” Mr. Xi echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the Tianjin meeting would “further elevate” bilateral relations and promote sustainable development between the two nations.

Xi Jinping emphasized that the two sides should “not let the border issue define the overall China-India relationship.” He asserted that the primary focus should be on economic development for both countries. “As long as they remain committed to the overarching goal of being partners, not rivals, and providing development opportunities, not threats, China-India relations will flourish and move forward steadily,” Mr. Xi added, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The meeting in Tianjin comes as Russian leader Vladimir Putin is also scheduled to meet with both leaders in the coming days. This interaction follows a series of diplomatic efforts aimed at mending ties that had been strained in recent years. Earlier in August, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, visited New Delhi to discuss the thawing of relations, indicating a mutual desire for rapprochement.

During Mr. Wang’s visit, he coincided with US President Donald Trump‘s controversial decision to impose a 50% tariff on India for its purchase of Russian oil. Despite this, India’s initiative to rebuild ties with China had been underway for several months.

In 2023, there has been a noticeable increase in official visits between China and India, with discussions focused on easing trade restrictions and facilitating the movement of people across their shared border. Notably, in June, China permitted Indian pilgrims to visit holy sites in Tibet, signaling a willingness to foster closer ties.

This diplomatic engagement reflects a broader strategy by both nations to prioritize economic cooperation while managing their complex relationship. As both leaders aim to transform their partnership, the outcomes of the Tianjin summit could significantly influence regional stability and economic interactions in the Asia-Pacific area.
