Canadian Startup Furble Launches to Enhance Pet Prescription Access
A new online platform, Furble, has officially launched across Canada, aiming to improve the accessibility and affordability of pet prescriptions. Founded by Lisa MacIntyre-Smith, Aaron Eckler, and Matt Friesen, the service enables pet owners to fill prescriptions for their animals online and have them delivered directly to their homes. Currently, the platform is not available in Quebec but is actively working to expand its services there.
The initiative responds to a pressing issue highlighted in a recent study by PetSmart Charities of Canada. The research indicated that nearly half of Canadian pet owners do not take their pets to the veterinarian, often due to financial constraints. Specifically, 67 percent of respondents cited affordability as a primary reason for avoiding veterinary visits. Additionally, those living farther from veterinary clinics were more likely to skip essential appointments.
MacIntyre-Smith, who leads the company from Halifax, noted that Furble was designed to alleviate these challenges. “That’s what inspired Furble: to create an accessible and affordable, Canadian-built platform so families don’t have to choose between essential vet visits and the prescriptions and products their pets rely on,” she stated.
Furble offers a streamlined process for pet owners. After a veterinarian prescribes medication, they can send the prescription to one of Furble’s licensed pharmacy partners. These partners manage the fulfillment and delivery, ensuring that pet parents receive their orders without the need to travel.
The company’s name reflects the playful nature of pet ownership, drawing inspiration from the lighthearted voices pet owners often use when communicating with their animals. A portion of Furble’s profits is committed to supporting Canadian animal charities, although specific figures regarding this allocation were not disclosed.
The launch of Furble comes at a time when Canada’s pet care industry is witnessing significant investment. Recently, Pawsible Ventures introduced a new $10 million fund aimed at supporting early-stage startups in the pet health sector. In another development, the Romanian-founded software company Digitail is expanding its operations in Toronto following a successful Series B funding round of $23 million USD (approximately $32 million CAD).
As the demand for accessible pet care continues to grow, Furble aims to bridge the gap for pet owners across Canada, providing a convenient and affordable solution for essential pet health needs.
