Canadians Demand Strong AI Regulation, Poll Reveals Majority Support

A recent poll reveals that a significant majority of Canadians advocate for government regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). Conducted by Leger from August 22 to August 25, the survey found that 85% of respondents support the regulation of AI tools to ensure ethical and safe usage. Among those surveyed, 57% expressed strong agreement with the need for such regulations.
The poll, which included 1,518 participants, was conducted online. It is important to note that online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error due to the lack of random sampling, as explained by the Canadian Research Insights Council. Despite concerns regarding the potential risks associated with AI, including threats to employment, the survey indicates a growing reliance on AI technologies. Since March, usage of AI tools has increased by 10%, with 57% of respondents confirming they have utilized an AI application.
Amid these findings, Canada’s artificial intelligence minister has stated a shift in focus away from stringent AI regulations. This development aligns with a broader global trend where governments are prioritizing the adoption of AI technologies rather than their governance and safety.
Concerns about AI’s impact on society remain high. Many Canadians are apprehensive about the implications of AI on jobs and ethical considerations. The strong support for regulation indicates a desire among the public for a balanced approach to harnessing AI’s potential while safeguarding societal interests.
The results of this survey highlight an ongoing dialogue in Canada regarding the future of AI and the role of government oversight. As the conversation evolves, it remains to be seen how policymakers will respond to the public’s call for regulation in this rapidly advancing field. The findings were first reported by The Canadian Press on August 27, 2025.
