Chilliwack Launches Pilot Project to Reduce Speed Limits in Two Neighbourhoods
The City of Chilliwack has initiated a one-year pilot project aimed at enhancing road safety by lowering speed limits to 40 kilometres per hour in two selected neighbourhoods. Approved in October 2025, this initiative features newly installed signage to inform drivers of the changes.
The chosen neighbourhoods are Garrison Crossing and Fairfield. Garrison Crossing represents an area that already employs traffic-calming measures, while Fairfield is characterized by its wider roads that typically lack sidewalks or traffic calming features. Reports indicate that traffic speeds in Fairfield have historically been higher compared to Garrison Crossing, highlighting the need for intervention.
This pilot project aligns with similar initiatives undertaken in various cities across Canada. Communities such as Duncan, Nelson, Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Edmonton have successfully implemented speed limit reductions to improve safety in their neighbourhoods.
The City of Chilliwack aims to assess the impact of reduced speed limits on traffic behaviour and overall community safety. By gathering data during the pilot year, officials hope to make informed decisions regarding the potential for wider adoption of lower speed limits throughout the city.
City officials believe that this initiative will not only reduce the likelihood of accidents but also create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. The project has been met with support from local residents who are eager to see improvements in road safety.
As cities across the country continue to explore innovative ways to enhance traffic safety, Chilliwack’s pilot project stands as a proactive measure in addressing community concerns. The results of this initiative will be closely monitored and evaluated, with findings expected to guide future policy decisions in the realm of urban traffic management.
By actively engaging with local communities and adapting to their specific needs, Chilliwack is positioning itself as a leader in implementing effective and sustainable traffic safety measures.
