Hyundai Charges £49 for Keyless Entry Security Upgrade
Hyundai is introducing a paid security and software upgrade for the Ioniq 5 model, addressing vulnerabilities in keyless entry systems that have made vehicles susceptible to theft. Vehicle owners are required to pay £49 (approximately $78 CAD) to enhance their vehicle’s software and security components. This upgrade aims to thwart theft attempts that exploit flaws in Hyundai’s security systems, particularly those using handheld tools resembling a Nintendo Game Boy.
The devices, which have been in circulation since 2020, have been linked to a rise in vehicle thefts involving several manufacturers’ keyless entry systems. Notably, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and Mitsubishi vehicles have been identified as especially vulnerable. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 models rank among the top 20 cars most likely to be stolen, according to various reports.
Security Upgrade Details
While Hyundai has devised a solution to this pressing issue, the decision to impose a fee for the upgrade has drawn criticism from owners. The expectation that vehicles should be protected against security flaws is heightened by the fact that Hyundai offers a standard five-year warranty on its cars.
Currently, the upgrade option is available exclusively in the U.K., but Hyundai Ioniq 5 owners can verify their vehicles’ eligibility for the upgrade on the official Hyundai website. This move comes as a response to growing concerns about vehicle security and the increasing sophistication of theft methods that target keyless systems.
Hyundai’s initiative highlights the balance between securing customer vehicles and the company’s responsibility to address existing security vulnerabilities without additional costs to consumers. As auto theft continues to evolve, manufacturers are under pressure to protect their customers’ investments proactively.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether Hyundai will extend this upgrade option to other regions and potentially re-evaluate its pricing strategy in light of customer feedback and security concerns.
