Jeep Recalls Over 20,000 PHEVs in Canada Due to Fire Risk

Stellantis has initiated a recall of 20,753 Jeep plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Canada due to a serious fire risk linked to the high-voltage battery. This action impacts specific models, including the 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler and the 2022-2025 Grand Cherokee. Owners are advised to refrain from charging their vehicles until a permanent solution is implemented.

The issue stems from a defect in the high-voltage battery pack, which may contain cells susceptible to separator damage. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this damage can lead to fire hazards, whether the vehicle is parked or in operation. Stellantis has indicated that the risk diminishes when the battery is depleted, but the potential for an incident remains.

Previous Recalls and Ongoing Risks

This recall is not the first concerning battery issues among Jeep models. In 2023, Stellantis recalled 3,856 Wranglers in Canada from the 2021 to 2023 model years, followed by another recall in 2024 affecting 14,038 vehicles, which included additional models of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. Transport Canada has noted that prior repairs may not have fully resolved the issue, necessitating further remedial actions.

Affected owners will receive notification by mail in the coming weeks. Although a remedy is under development, Stellantis has urged owners to avoid recharging their vehicles until the fix is available. As a precaution, they recommend parking the vehicles outdoors and away from structures or other vehicles to mitigate fire risks.

Next Steps for Affected Owners

Once a remedial solution is finalized, vehicle owners will need to bring their PHEVs to a dealership for repairs at no cost. To determine if their vehicle is impacted, owners can check the Transport Canada website using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The recall’s identification numbers are 2025-595 for Transport Canada and 68C for Stellantis.

As the auto industry continues to navigate the complexities of electric vehicle safety, this recall underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring and proactive measures to ensure consumer safety. Owners are encouraged to stay informed through official channels, including Transport Canada, for updates related to this significant recall.
