Mercedes-Benz Unveils Enhanced 2027 GLB Compact Crossover
The luxury automotive market is witnessing a significant transformation with the introduction of the enhanced 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB compact crossover. This model aims to set new standards in the highly competitive compact luxury crossover segment by offering both hybrid and electric powertrains, allowing consumers to choose according to their preferences.
For the 2027 model year, Mercedes-Benz has streamlined its nomenclature for its vehicles. The GLB and EQB, previously differentiated by name, will now be consolidated under the GLB branding, with electric variants designated as “GLB with EQ Technology.” This strategic choice highlights the brand’s commitment to leveraging its established name recognition while simplifying consumer choices.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The 2027 GLB will feature several configurations to cater to a variety of driving needs. The electric models include the GLB 250+ and the GLB 350 4Matic. The GLB 250+ is a rear-wheel-drive variant that delivers an impressive 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from zero to highway speeds in approximately 7.4 seconds. In contrast, the all-wheel-drive GLB 350 4Matic boasts a more powerful 348 horsepower and can achieve the same in about five seconds, marking a notable improvement over its predecessor, the EQB.
The new electric GLB is equipped with an 85 kWh battery, which enhances its usability compared to previous models. Charging capabilities have also seen significant upgrades, with a maximum charging speed of 320 kW when connected to a compatible DC fast charger. The estimated driving range exceeds 600 kilometers on the WLTP cycle, although it is anticipated to be lower under North American testing standards, likely in the high 400-kilometer range.
The hybrid variant, known as the GLB 250 4Matic, combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric powertrain, producing a total output of 228 horsepower and around 280 lb-ft of torque. This model features a newly developed 48-volt lithium-ion battery and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing for electric-only driving at speeds up to 100 km/h under specific conditions.
Design and Interior Features
Design-wise, the 2027 GLB maintains a boxy aesthetic with upright glass and a near-vertical rear hatch, enhancing its spaciousness. The vehicle has grown approximately 10 centimeters in length and features a wheelbase that is six centimeters longer than its predecessor. Both hybrid and electric versions share similar exterior styling, making them difficult to distinguish at a glance.
Inside, the GLB offers premium features aimed at enhancing the driving experience. The vehicle comes standard with the MBUX Superscreen, which incorporates three displays: a 10.25-inch driver cluster and two 14-inch infotainment screens. The system runs on the proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates various applications and navigation powered by Google Maps.
Passengers can also enjoy a fixed panoramic roof that offers a spacious feel, while the vehicle’s increased length benefits rear-seat occupants. The GLB can accommodate up to seven passengers with an optional third row designed for children. Cargo capacity remains competitive, with the two-row model offering 540 liters of space with seats up and 1,715 liters when folded down.
Notably, the electric variant introduces a front trunk, or “frunk,” providing an additional 127 liters of storage space. Mercedes-Benz has also returned to traditional buttons for controls like cruise and audio volume, moving away from the previously criticized haptic touch controls.
As for pricing, the 2027 GLB 250 4Matic hybrid is expected to start around $55,500 in Canada, with the electric models priced at 59,048 euros for the GLB 250+ and 62,178 euros for the GLB 350 4Matic in Germany. The anticipated launch of all models in Canada is projected for late 2026 or early 2027.
With these advancements, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB aims to solidify its position in the compact luxury crossover market, appealing to both traditional drivers and those transitioning to electric mobility.
