Regina Flying Club Hosts Open House Featuring Cold War Jet

The Regina Flying Club is set to host a free open house event on September 7, 2023, showcasing a remarkable piece of aviation history: the Cold War-era Fouga Magister. This event offers aviation enthusiasts and curious visitors a unique opportunity to explore this two-seat jet trainer, originally designed and constructed for the French Air Force in the 1950s.
The Fouga Magister was not only a training aircraft but also served as a close air support platform during its operational life, utilized in combat by various nations. While many of these jets have been retired, several models have found new homes among private collectors. One notable example is owned by Golden Era Aviation, which is based at the Regina International Airport.
Visitors to the open house can expect more than just a static display. The Fouga Magister offers a “bucket list experience” as one of only two locations in Canada where civilians can fly in a former military jet. With a top speed of approximately 750 kilometers per hour, the aircraft has been fully restored and is ready for those seeking an exhilarating flight experience.
Experience the Thrill of Flight
The flight experience, described as a “Top Gun” adventure, includes a range of maneuvers designed to provide passengers with a taste of aviation excitement. According to Mike Moula, the Magister’s pilot, the experience begins with gentle banking to gauge the comfort level of the passenger. As the flight progresses, the intensity increases, introducing varying levels of g-force, starting from 1.5 g and potentially reaching up to 3 g.
“If everything is going well in the air and they want to see a little bit more, then we can do some loops and rolls. A few, what we call gentleman’s aerobatics,” Moula explained, highlighting the exhilarating nature of the flight.
In addition to the Fouga Magister, the open house will feature a variety of other aircraft, providing a comprehensive look at both historical and modern aviation. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., allowing ample time for attendees to explore and engage with aviation experts.
The Regina Flying Club’s open house promises to be an exciting day for aviation fans, offering insights into the rich history of flight and the thrill of flying a jet that has seen significant action during its service.
