Spotify Launches Music Videos for Subscribers in US and Canada
Spotify has officially launched its Music Videos feature for subscribers in the United States and Canada. This rollout, currently in beta, allows users to access a wide array of official music videos, including studio recordings, live performances, and covers. Previously, the feature was introduced in 11 countries last year but did not include the US until now.
The delay in offering Music Videos in the US stemmed from licensing issues. Recently, Spotify secured a deal with the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) that includes updated provisions for video content, paving the way for this expansion.
To access Music Videos, premium subscribers in beta markets can open a track on various devices, including TV, desktop, iOS, and Android, and select “Switch to Video.” The video will play seamlessly from the point where the audio track left off. By rotating their device to landscape mode, users can enjoy a full-screen experience. If they prefer listening without the video, they can easily revert by selecting “Switch to audio.”
Gradual Expansion of Video Catalog
While the initial catalog of music videos is limited, Spotify indicates that it will expand rapidly over the coming months. The company has observed that incorporating videos can significantly enhance the listening experience. According to a recent survey conducted by Burson, over 70% of users believe that having more video content would improve their overall interaction with Spotify.
Spotify has also reported that users who discover a song and subsequently watch its video are 34% more likely to stream the song again within the week, and 24% more likely to save or share it. This data underscores the potential impact of integrating video on user engagement and retention.
In response to growing competition from platforms like YouTube and TikTok, Spotify is reportedly working towards creating a “best-in-class video experience.” This initiative aims to elevate their content offerings and attract more users who are inclined towards video consumption alongside music streaming.
As Spotify continues to innovate and expand its features, the addition of music videos is a significant step forward in enhancing user experience and staying competitive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
