Survey Reveals 32% of Consumers Use AI Daily Despite Trust Issues

A recent survey conducted by Shift Browser highlights a significant shift in consumer behavior regarding artificial intelligence (AI). The findings from the 2026 AI Consumer Insights Survey reveal that 32% of consumers now interact with AI on a daily basis. Despite this high usage, concerns about trust and control remain prevalent among users.

The survey, which gathered responses from over 1,400 individuals, indicates that while AI has integrated into many aspects of online life, users are exhibiting caution. More than half of the respondents stated that AI enhances their digital experiences, yet a critical question arises: who maintains control over these technologies?

Consumer Preferences and Control over AI

An important takeaway from the survey is that a one-size-fits-all approach does not satisfy users’ needs. Approximately 51% of participants emphasized the desire for customization or the ability to limit AI functionalities. Rather than wishing to eliminate AI, users express a preference for having the option to guide its operations or deactivate it when necessary. Currently, 26% of users report difficulties in managing or disabling AI features in their digital tools, highlighting a clear “control gap” that developers must address to ensure user satisfaction.

Privacy concerns are also at the forefront of users’ minds. An overwhelming 81% of respondents voiced apprehensions regarding AI’s access to private conversations and data. Only 16% of those surveyed expressed a strong level of trust in AI answer engines, suggesting a significant divide between usage and confidence.

The Role of AI in Daily Activities

Despite the lingering distrust, many consumers acknowledge the influence of AI on their decision-making. Around 58% of respondents admitted that AI-generated responses had altered their opinions at least once. This indicates that while users remain skeptical, they are still engaging with AI tools.

As AI technology evolves, concerns are shifting towards emerging “agentic” features—systems capable of taking actions on behalf of users, such as booking flights or managing calendars. Approximately 44% of consumers expressed worries about AI executing unauthorized actions. Interestingly, nearly half of the respondents indicated a willingness to accept autonomous features, provided there is transparency in their operations.

Demographic trends reveal that younger individuals, particularly those aged 25 to 34, are the most frequent users of AI. In contrast, around 20% of the population, primarily individuals over 65, do not engage with these technologies at all.

Beyond privacy issues and age-related usage gaps, a new concern is emerging: sustainability. More than half of those surveyed, approximately 57%, are now worried about the substantial energy consumption associated with maintaining AI models.

The survey also shed light on the primary uses of AI. According to the results, 54% of respondents utilize AI as a research assistant, while 34% employ it for summarizing lengthy articles, and 32% find it beneficial for automating tedious tasks. Ultimately, users want to know they can intervene and regain control whenever necessary.

As AI continues to evolve, addressing these concerns will be critical for developers aiming to foster trust and enhance user experience.
