Survey Reveals Buyers Prioritize Price Over AI Features in Smartphones

A recent survey conducted by CNET and YouGov has highlighted a significant trend among smartphone buyers: the emphasis on traditional specifications over advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features. According to the findings, only 11% of U.S. smartphone owners consider AI capabilities a reason to upgrade their devices. This marks a noticeable decline in interest compared to 2024. Instead, factors such as price, battery life, and storage continue to dominate consumer priorities.
Price and Performance Take Precedence
The survey results indicate that 62% of respondents prioritize price when selecting a new smartphone, illustrating a clear inclination towards cost-effectiveness. Battery life follows closely behind, with 54% of buyers ranking it as a crucial feature. Storage and camera quality also play significant roles, with 39% and 30% of buyers, respectively, considering these elements essential in their purchasing decisions.
Despite Apple’s reputation for innovation, the company has faced scrutiny for lagging behind competitors like Samsung and Google in the AI domain. Samsung has aggressively marketed its AI capabilities across models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, while Google’s Pixel 10 integrates advanced AI features powered by its Gemini platform.
Consumer Sentiment on AI Features
The survey reflects a broader sentiment among consumers who seem less impressed by the AI enhancements that have become a focal point for many tech companies. While advancements in generative AI are often highlighted in marketing campaigns, the majority of buyers appear to remain unconvinced of their necessity.
These findings suggest that, for many consumers, the perceived value of AI features does not outweigh practical considerations. Buyers are focusing on tangible benefits such as improved battery life and more storage, which are seen as essential for everyday use.
As the technology landscape continues to evolve, manufacturers may need to reassess their strategies to align with consumer preferences. The emphasis on AI features, while innovative, may not resonate as strongly with buyers who prioritize cost and performance above all else.
In summary, the CNET and YouGov survey underscores the importance of understanding consumer priorities in a competitive market. While AI capabilities may be the future, for now, the tortoise appears to be winning the race in the smartphone industry, with price and performance leading the way.
