VAC McHenry Expands Transportation Services for Veterans by 2026
The Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) of McHenry County has announced plans to expand its transportation services for veterans, aiming for implementation in 2026. This initiative addresses a critical barrier veterans face in accessing healthcare and essential services, ensuring they can travel safely and efficiently to necessary appointments.
Currently, VAC McHenry provides scheduled transportation from designated pickup locations in various communities throughout McHenry County. Veterans can utilize this service to reach important facilities such as the Lovell Federal Health Care Center, local VA clinics, and other approved service locations. This program specifically caters to veterans who may no longer drive or who encounter difficulties with public transportation. Importantly, there are no fees associated with these services, removing financial barriers to care.
Expansion Plans for 2026
Looking ahead to 2026, VAC McHenry intends to broaden its reach by adding new pickup locations in additional communities, including Huntley and potentially Marengo. This expansion is a response to the increasing demand for transportation assistance and reflects the Commission’s commitment to serving veterans who reside farther from existing pickup points.
Moreover, VAC is working on enhancing home pickup options on a case-by-case basis. Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, home pickups have proven particularly beneficial for veterans with mobility challenges or other limitations that hinder their access to designated transportation points. Currently, the transportation program operates with three vehicles and four trained drivers, with plans to add an additional vehicle in 2026. This addition will improve service flexibility, increase capacity, and extend service hours.
Additional Support for Veterans
In addition to general transportation services, VAC McHenry is exploring new support options for veterans involved in the court system. This initiative will assist veterans in traveling to and from court-mandated treatments and appointments, further integrating transportation into broader veteran support services.
Veterans interested in utilizing these transportation services can call the Transportation Hotline at 815-334-0303 to arrange rides. For those not yet registered in the system, it is recommended to first contact the main office at 815-334-4229.
For further information, veterans can reach out to the Veterans Assistance Commission of McHenry County at:

This expansion of transportation services illustrates VAC McHenry’s ongoing commitment to improving access to vital resources for veterans, ensuring they can receive the care and support they need.
