$178M Funding Secured for UVic’s Urgent Student Housing Project
BREAKING: The University of Victoria (UVic) has just secured $178 million in funding for a crucial new student housing project aimed at alleviating the pressing need for affordable accommodation. The provincial government is committing $121 million, while UVic will contribute $57 million to build a 510-bed residence in Saanich, British Columbia.
This transformative housing initiative is designed specifically for upper-year undergraduate and graduate students, addressing the urgent challenges many face in finding affordable housing close to campus. The new facility will be strategically located on a parking lot off Sinclair Road, right in the heart of UVic’s residence area and near the UVic Transit Exchange.
Construction is set to begin in spring 2026, marking a significant step forward in supporting student success. “The new student residence will be transformative for our upper-year undergraduate and graduate students,” stated Qwul’sih’yah’maht Robina Thomas, UVic’s acting president and vice-chancellor. “Living on campus gives students better access to academic and wellness supports and strengthens their connections to peers, allowing them to focus on what matters: their education.”
The proposed building will meet zero-carbon and fully electric standards, aiming for LEED Gold certification. This aligns with the objectives of CleanBC and UVic’s climate and sustainability action plan, showcasing the province’s commitment to a more sustainable future.
Local officials are praising the announcement. “Affordable, accessible housing is key to student success,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “By expanding on-campus options at UVic, we’re not only supporting learners, but we’re also helping to reduce demand on the broader rental market. This is a meaningful investment in education and in our community.”
As the urgency surrounding student housing escalates, the approval of this funding marks a significant milestone for UVic and its commitment to enhancing the student experience. With construction on the horizon, the community is watching closely for updates on this vital project.
