1985 Toyota Tercel Surpasses 1.2M km Milestone, Still Thriving

UPDATE: In a remarkable feat of endurance, a 1985 Toyota Tercel owned by Andy Campbell has surpassed an astounding 1,253,070 kilometres—the equivalent of driving around the Earth 31 times. This incredible milestone was confirmed when the odometer rolled over to 000,000 km in September 2017, leaving Campbell with tangible proof of the journey.
This Tercel, which Campbell purchased for $2,500 in Halifax back in 1990, continues to serve as his daily driver, clocking an average of 120 km each day. Now retired, Campbell still relies on his trusty vehicle for errands across Nova Scotia and even ventures as far as Newfoundland.
Campbell’s dedication to his Tercel is evident. He maintains the car himself, having replaced nearly every part over the years, with the original body being the sole survivor of its many repairs. “It looks like junk and to most people, it probably is,” he states, “But to me, it’s gold.” His DIY approach extends to having three additional Tercels on blocks for spare parts, ensuring he can keep his beloved car on the road.
The 82-year-old car enthusiast emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, stating, “The key to keeping a car running for a long time is to do regular maintenance such as oil changes and lubrication.” He has even developed a unique method to combat rust, ensuring his Tercel remains in top condition despite its age.
Campbell’s story resonates with many, as he frequently encounters fellow Tercel owners, including Jim George of Kentville, who boasts a Tercel with 534,000 km on the clock. George notes that owning a Tercel often sparks conversations and cherished memories, highlighting the emotional connection many have with these vehicles.
While Campbell dreams of reaching two million kilometres, he acknowledges the uncertainty of meeting that goal. Strangers often stop him to take photos of his car and share their own nostalgic Tercel stories. Despite the offers to purchase his vehicle, Campbell firmly states, “Not a chance. It’s not for sale now, next week, or ever.”
This extraordinary story of longevity and dedication not only showcases the resilience of the Toyota Tercel but also highlights the personal journey of a man who cherishes his vehicle far beyond its mechanical capabilities. As Campbell continues to drive through the Maritimes, he proves that sometimes, it’s not just about the destination, but the journey itself.
Stay tuned for more updates on this incredible automotive tale, as Campbell’s journey continues to inspire car enthusiasts and casual observers alike.
