80% of BC Ferries Workers Report Threats; Union Urges Kindness
UPDATE: A staggering 80% of BC Ferries workers report experiencing threats on the job, according to a recent survey by the BC Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union. As the Thanksgiving long weekend begins, the union is urgently calling on travelers to show kindness and patience towards ferry staff.
The alarming survey results reveal that 92% of respondents have witnessed threats of violence, while 65%Eric McNeely, the union’s president, in a news release today.
Incidents reported by workers include passengers driving vehicles aggressively toward staff, as well as physical assaults such as biting and kicking. Nearly half of those surveyed admitted that such violence has made them consider quitting their jobs, highlighting a severe crisis in workplace safety.
Only 25% of respondents believe that BC Ferries takes reported incidents seriously, indicating a pressing need for stronger enforcement of safety policies. “We need BC Ferries to back up our crews,” McNeely emphasized. “It’s easy. If you threaten a worker, you don’t sail.”
In an interview with CTV News Vancouver Island, McNeely urged travelers to remember the humanity of ferry staff. “Just, frankly, be kind,” he said. “Be nice to people you see. And remember the people that you see in uniform, they’re not the ones setting the price, the reservation rates, or the sailing times. They’re doing the best they can to move as many people as possible to whatever event they have this weekend.”
As thousands plan to travel over the holiday, the union’s plea for kindness is more critical than ever. Authorities report that the behavior of a minority of travelers can significantly affect the safety and morale of ferry workers.
With the long weekend in full swing, travelers are encouraged to approach ferry staff with respect and understanding to ensure a smooth experience for everyone. The union continues to advocate for better protections and support for its members, urging BC Ferries to prioritize worker safety.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story and consider sharing this vital message with fellow travelers. Every act of kindness counts on our ferries this weekend.
