UPDATE: This weekend, 800 cyclists are gearing up to ascend Cypress Mountain in an urgent effort to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The Cypress Challenge, taking place on Sunday, October 15, 2023, is expected to be the largest privately funded fundraising event for pancreatic cancer in Canada, aiming to contribute to the over $5.2 million raised in previous years.

Every year, the BC Cancer Foundation estimates that approximately 800 British Columbians will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with a staggering 90% projected to survive less than five years post-diagnosis. This grim statistic highlights the urgent need for awareness and funding, making the Cypress Challenge more crucial than ever.

Among the participants is Anthony Thomas, a West Vancouver resident diagnosed with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer just last year. His journey began when he experienced severe pain while traveling back from British Columbia’s Interior. Following his wife’s prompt to seek medical attention, he was rushed to an emergency department in Whistler. Although initially treated for kidney stones, tests revealed masses on his pancreas and liver, leading to his diagnosis.

“It’s been a challenging year, for sure, because I felt completely normal and fine,” Thomas told CTV News. He expressed a sense of relief upon learning his cancer type is rare but manageable, stating, “When I found that out, I really felt like I’d won the lottery.” Since his diagnosis, Thomas and his family have raised over $50,000 for pancreatic cancer research, with hopes to increase that amount during the Cypress Challenge.

On Sunday, teams will embark on a 12 km trek up the mountain, confronting steep terrain in a show of solidarity and support for those affected by this devastating disease. Donations can be made on the Cypress Challenge website, directly contributing to critical research and care efforts.

This event not only raises funds but also serves to spread awareness about pancreatic cancer and its impact on families. As the cyclists prepare to hit the trails, the community rallies behind them, united in the fight against a disease that affects far too many.

Stay tuned for updates on this inspiring event and the ongoing efforts to combat pancreatic cancer.
