99-Year-Old Stan Fryer Inspires with Pickleball Skills Today

Fryer, who began playing pickleball in his 70s, has become a beacon of positivity in the community, teaching between 1,000 to 1,200 students over the last decade. His weekly lessons draw people of all ages, helping them discover the joy of sports and encouraging camaraderie among participants.
The vibrant atmosphere at Peace Portal Church on Wednesdays is palpable as Fryer welcomes eager learners. “Pickleball is so much fun,” he states, emphasizing the joy he feels watching newcomers overcome their fears and enjoy the game. “Seeing the expression on their face is priceless.”
Originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Fryer recalls his childhood move to the South Surrey area in the 1930s, a time when summer cottages and trees filled the landscape. “I remember jumping out of the car and running into the water with my clothes on,” he reminisces fondly.
As a caregiver to his late wife, Shirley, who battled Alzheimer’s, Fryer found solace in teaching pickleball, channeling his love for the sport into a meaningful pursuit. “I was a caregiver for 18 years,” he reflects. “You learn a lot about yourself and the world during those times.”
Fryer’s passion for dancing and sports has remained steadfast over the decades. He took up track and field at the age of 80 and continues to participate in dance events at local community centers. His energy and zest for life at this age are inspiring to all around him.
As the fastest-growing sport in North America, pickleball has gained significant popularity, and Fryer’s dedication to teaching has made a considerable impact on his community. “Some have never played any sport, and to see them realize how much fun it is – it’s incredible,” he shares.
