UPDATE: American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris has been arrested in Okinawa, Japan, on suspicion of drug smuggling, officials confirmed today. The arrest occurred on November 16, 2023, at Naha Airport, where customs officials discovered 0.78 grams of the psychedelic drug ecstasy (MDMA) in his tote bag.

Harris, known for his Tony-nominated play “Slave Play,” was traveling from London’s Heathrow Airport and had transited through Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport before arriving in Okinawa for sightseeing. The playwright, aged 36, was detained immediately after the discovery and has since been taken into custody by Tomishiro police.

According to Tatsunori Fukuda, spokesperson for Okinawa Regional Customs, the authorities believe the MDMA was intended for personal use. No additional drugs were found in his luggage. The police filed a criminal complaint with the Naha District Prosecutors’ Office on Thursday, initiating further investigation and potential indictment.

The implications of this arrest are significant; Japan has strict drug laws, and those convicted of drug smuggling can face lengthy prison sentences. Harris’s arrest has sent shockwaves through the arts community, raising questions about the impact on his career and ongoing projects.

Harris gained fame with “Slave Play,” which premiered off-Broadway in 2018 and stirred controversy over its themes of race, class, and sexuality. The play later moved to Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for Best Play. Beyond his work in theater, he has appeared on HBO’s “Euphoria” and had a cameo in the rebooted “Gossip Girl.”

As this story develops, further updates will be provided on the legal proceedings and Harris’s response to the allegations. This arrest marks a critical moment not only for the playwright but also for discussions surrounding drug policies in Japan.

Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue their investigation.
