The game reached a fever pitch as Ben Wilmott found Fimis at the top of the crease just 1:42 into overtime. Despite being fatigued, Wilmott executed a brilliant move at the blue line, setting up Fimis for a stunning finish that secured the win for London.
The Knights started strong, scoring two goals in the first period. Rene Van Bommel broke through Windsor’s defense at the 4:05 mark, netting his fifth goal of the season with a slick shot that slipped past Spitfires goalie Joey Costanzo. The Knights showcased their defensive prowess, successfully killing off a two-man disadvantage later in the period.
Before the first intermission, Henry Brzustewicz assisted Jaxon Cover for a one-timer, extending London’s lead to 2-0 with Cover’s eighth goal of the year. However, Windsor rallied back in the second period. Wyatt Kennedy ignited the Spitfires’ comeback with a goal at 14:30, cutting the deficit to one.
The Spitfires continued to press, and Jack Nesbitt scored his second goal in two nights, tying the game at 2-2 with a rebound shot at 12:34 of the third period.
Knights goalie Aleksei Medvedev made crucial saves against Windsor’s most potent threats, keeping the Knights in the game as the tension mounted.
With the game on the line, Fimis delivered the overtime heroics, clinching a crucial victory for London. The Knights outshot the Spitfires 29-26 and maintained a perfect penalty kill, going 4-for-4 in that department.
Looking ahead, the Knights are set to face off against St. Catharines on December 11, where they will encounter familiar faces, including Noah Read and Liam Spencer, both former teammates who won the Memorial Cup last year. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 980 CFPL, with streaming available on 980cfpl.ca, as well as on the iHeart Radio and Radioplayer Canada apps.
