Andre De Grasse Receives Order of Canada, Honoring Athletic Legacy
UPDATE: Canadian sprint star Andre De Grasse has just been awarded the prestigious Order of Canada, as confirmed by the Governor General’s office in a call received late October. This honor will be officially bestowed on him on Wednesday, November 10, 2023, marking a significant recognition of his remarkable achievements both on and off the track.
The 31-year-old from Markham, Ontario, expressed his surprise at receiving such an esteemed award while still actively competing. “Usually you don’t receive this award until you’re older,” De Grasse stated, reflecting on the honor’s significance at this stage in his career. The Order of Canada is the nation’s highest civilian award, categorized into three levels: Companion, Officer, and Member. De Grasse has been named a Member, emphasizing his impactful contributions to athletics and community empowerment.
De Grasse’s Olympic accolades are historic; he was the first Canadian to medal in all three sprint events during his debut at the Rio 2016 Olympics. He has since secured a total of two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals across three Olympic appearances, excelling in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100 relay. Additionally, he boasts six world championship medals, including a recent silver in September, anchoring the men’s relay team.
Off the track, De Grasse is committed to nurturing young talent through his Andre De Grasse Future Champions Scholarship Program. Launched in 2018, the initiative has provided support to 57 young athletes across five provinces, amounting to $170,000 in funding. This program connects recipients with mentor Tony Sharpe, a former Canadian relay medallist, and offers essential resources like dietitian support and local club memberships. Remarkably, five athletes from this program have advanced to the Canadian national athletics team, collectively earning over $2 million in NCAA scholarships.
De Grasse also recently hosted the inaugural Andre De Grasse Holiday Sprint Festival in Whitby, Ontario, showcasing elite high school athletes, para athletes, and Special Olympians competing in various sprint events. His dedication to community and youth empowerment reflects his values beyond athletics. Yet, he admitted that receiving such recognition was not something he anticipated. “You’re not thinking about that because that’s probably what you’re thinking later down the line as you get older,” he remarked, highlighting his focus on immediate priorities like career and family.
Previously, De Grasse received the Order of Ontario in 2023 for his outstanding athletic achievements and his significant contributions to youth empowerment through sports and education. “I’m just proud of all the stuff I’ve done,” he said, expressing hope to continue his impactful work for years to come.
As De Grasse prepares to accept this distinguished honor, the sports community and fans alike celebrate his legacy and ongoing commitment to inspiring the next generation of athletes. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as De Grasse’s recognition unfolds.
