Assaults in Montreal Metro Surge 15% in 2025, Reaching 726
UPDATE: Assaults reported in Montreal’s metro system have surged by 15 percent in 2025, with a total of 726 incidents, according to newly released police data. This alarming rise marks the highest number of assaults since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when ridership dramatically fell.
Authorities confirmed that the majority of the increase was concentrated in January 2025, leaving police puzzled over the sudden spike. Cmdr. Angélique Beaudet stated in an urgent interview, “I don’t have a very precise explanation for the increase, other than it was really concentrated in January.”
Comparatively, the number of assaults in 2024 was 631, and 652 in 2023. The latest figures highlight a troubling trend that raises significant safety concerns for commuters and residents alike.
The Montreal metro, a vital transit system for the city’s population, has been under scrutiny as these statistics emerge. With police noting stability in the months following January, the focus now shifts to understanding and addressing the factors that contributed to this abrupt rise.
As the city grapples with these developments, commuters are urged to remain vigilant while traveling. With the safety of passengers on the line, this issue is sure to spark discussions among city officials and the public.
Authorities stress the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to ensure the safety and security of all metro users. The Montreal Police Department is expected to release further statements outlining their strategies to combat this troubling trend.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as we continue to monitor the safety of Montreal’s transit system.
