Assiniboine Park Launches Urgent Zoo History Tour This Weekend
UPDATE: The Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg is offering an exclusive Zoo History Tour, providing visitors a chance to explore over 100 years of animal care and community memories. This special event, which began on Saturday, is drawing crowds eager to connect with the zoo’s rich heritage.
Just announced: The final opportunity to participate in this unique tour is on Monday, September 1. Barret Miller, the manager of education and programming at the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, emphasized the tour’s significance, stating, “The zoo has been so important to so many people for such a long time.” Visitors can expect an interactive experience that goes beyond just seeing the animals, as the tour delves into the stories that shaped the zoo’s history.
The Zoo History Tour highlights key milestones, including advancements in animal care, particularly regarding bear habitats. Miller noted, “Setting the bar for bear care has changed substantially since we opened.” The acclaimed Journey to Churchill exhibit exemplifies the zoo’s commitment to providing optimal environments for its residents, particularly polar bears.
The tour also features the iconic Toucan Ridge, which has been a staple since the 1970s. Miller reminisced, “It is still thriving and supporting good animal care and good visitor experience,” showcasing the zoo’s ongoing dedication to both its animals and patrons.
This engaging tour not only serves to educate but also evokes a sense of nostalgia. Miller shared that inspiration came from his own family’s experiences visiting the zoo. “We had everybody, from three to almost 90, and the story just started flowing,” he recalled. This connection to personal memories underscores the impact the zoo has had across generations.
With the final tour happening soon, those interested are encouraged to act fast. The Zoo History Tour represents a rare opportunity to reflect on the past while looking forward to the future of one of Winnipeg’s most cherished attractions. Don’t miss out—secure your spot before it’s too late!
