At Least 49 Migrants Confirmed Dead as Boat Capsizes Off Mauritania
URGENT UPDATE: At least 49 migrants have died following a tragic boat capsizing off the coast of Mheijrat, Mauritania, this week, according to the Mauritanian coast guard. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning as the vessel, which had departed from Gambia a week earlier, was carrying approximately 160 people, including nationals from Senegal and Gambia.
Coast guard chief Mohamed Abdallah revealed that the migrants attempted to shift towards one side of the boat upon spotting lights from Mheijrat, which led to the capsizing. So far, only 17 survivors have been rescued, while many others remain unaccounted for.
This incident highlights the escalating dangers faced by migrants seeking passage to Europe, particularly through Mauritania’s increasingly perilous waters. In recent years, the route has seen a surge in traffic as economic conditions deteriorate across sub-Saharan Africa. Just last July, a similar tragedy claimed the lives of over a dozen migrants, with an alarming 150 individuals reported missing.
Authorities in Mauritania have responded by tightening control and implementing stricter expulsion measures against migrants. In a concerted effort to deter this dangerous migration trend, the country signed a €210 million (approximately $225 million) agreement with the European Union last year.
Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the treatment of migrants during these crackdowns, alleging instances of abuse amid the nationwide coastal operations. The desperate plight of West African migrants continues to worsen as they undertake perilous journeys across the Atlantic in search of better opportunities.
As the death toll from this latest incident rises, the need for urgent action to address the migrant crisis becomes increasingly apparent. Authorities are expected to ramp up rescue operations as they search for the missing individuals.
