Auston Matthews Breaks Record, Named NHL’s Third Star of the Week
UPDATE: Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews has just been named the NHL’s third star of the week after making history by breaking Mats Sundin‘s franchise goals record. This monumental achievement occurred during Saturday’s thrilling matchup against the New York Islanders, where Matthews scored twice in the second period.
Matthews tied Sundin’s previous record of 420 goals with his first goal and then surged ahead with a remarkable 421st goal, solidifying his place in Leafs history. The game ended in a 4-3 overtime loss for Toronto, but Matthews’ performance has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike.
This week has been a standout for Matthews, who also netted a hat trick last Thursday in a 6-5 victory against the Winnipeg Jets. His dynamic scoring ability continues to impress as he adds to his accolades as a three-time Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy winner, recognizing him as the league’s leading goal-scorer.
Joining Matthews in the spotlight, Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning was named the first star for the second consecutive week, racking up 10 points (three goals and seven assists) in three games. Kucherov’s contributions have propelled the Lightning to an impressive seven-game winning streak, solidifying their position at the top of the Atlantic Division.
Meanwhile, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins earned the second star, contributing a remarkable eight points (four goals, four assists) across four games. Crosby’s performance has helped the Penguins maintain their undefeated record for the week, climbing into the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
As the NHL season progresses, Matthews’ record-breaking moment and ongoing scoring prowess are poised to keep fans on the edge of their seats. With the playoffs approaching, every goal counts more than ever, making this achievement not only a personal milestone for Matthews but also a significant moment for the entire franchise.
Stay tuned for further updates as the season unfolds and watch for what Matthews will achieve next on his journey to greatness.
