Avalanche Surges Past Canucks 5-4 in Overtime Thriller
UPDATE: In a thrilling overtime showdown, the Colorado Avalanche edged the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 at Rogers Arena on November 10, 2025. Nathan MacKinnon delivered a spectacular performance with two goals and three assists, propelling the Avalanche to victory in this nail-biting NHL encounter.
The Avalanche struck first just 6:41 into the first period when MacKinnon capitalized on a perfect pass from Valeri Nichushkin, opening the scoring against the Canucks. This goal marked his ninth consecutive game with a point, setting the tone for a high-energy contest. MacKinnon quickly followed with another goal on the power play, notching his 58th career two-goal game.
The Canucks, however, were not to be outdone. Linus Karlsson notched his first goal of the season, showcasing a dazzling move that surprised Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. By the end of the first, Colorado held a slim 2-1 lead despite being outshot 17-9.
The second period saw Vancouver’s Kiefer Sherwood score early, tying the game with his 10th goal of the season. The Canucks maintained pressure, leading in shots 26-16 after two periods.
Just 28 seconds into the third, Artturi Lehkonen restored Colorado’s lead with a deflection from a pass by Brett Burns. Yet again, Vancouver responded when Drew O’Connor equalized with a shorthanded goal, making it 3-3 and showcasing his impressive form with seven points in the last six games.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Lehkonen scored again for Colorado, only for Jake DeBrusk to bring the Canucks level at 16:59 with a power-play goal. The tension reached its peak in overtime when Gavin Brindley scored the game-winner 68 seconds into the extra period, sealing a hard-fought victory for the Avalanche.
The win brings Colorado’s record to 10-1-5 while the Canucks fall to 8-8-1. This match marked a significant turning point as the Avalanche had previously struggled in overtime situations, boasting a record of 0-5 in such games this season.
In a post-game statement, the Avalanche expressed their excitement over MacKinnon’s performance, who now leads the league in scoring with 29 points, and discussed the team’s resilience through the match.
The Canucks will look to bounce back as they host the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday at 7 p.m., aiming to regain their momentum after this close loss.
Stay tuned for more updates as both teams continue their pursuit of playoff positioning in this tightly contested NHL season.
