B.C. Cancer Surgeon Leaves for Ontario, Patients Left in Limbo

URGENT UPDATE: A gynecologic cancer surgeon from British Columbia is relocating to Ontario due to unmet promises for expanded specialized care in his home province. Dr. Gurdial Dhillon, who has dedicated nearly three years to training in gynecological oncology, cites a lack of job opportunities in Fraser Health as the driving force behind his decision.
In July 2024, Premier David Eby pledged to enhance gynecologic cancer surgery services in both Kelowna and the Fraser Health region. While three specialists have been appointed in Kelowna, the Fraser Health area remains without any gynecologic oncologists, forcing patients to travel to Vancouver for essential treatments.
Dr. Dhillon expressed his frustration, stating, “I don’t want to leave, but for now, I can’t wait any longer to practice.” The absence of specialized care means that women battling cancer must navigate significant obstacles to receive treatment. “There is actually zero GYN oncologists in Fraser Health, which is the biggest health authority in the province,” he highlighted.
On Monday, Premier Eby acknowledged that gynecologic surgery services are still unavailable in Fraser Health but reiterated the province’s commitment to addressing the issue. “We have big challenges around basic health care in Fraser,” he stated, noting the region’s rapidly growing population.
Health Minister Josie Osborne emphasized that the expansion of services in Kelowna represents just the “first phase” of the province’s commitment. She reported that nearly 90% of women in B.C. can now access urgent cancer surgeries within the recommended four-week wait time, a significant increase from just 40% prior to the service expansion.
Despite this progress, Osborne could not provide a timeline for when gynecological cancer services will be introduced south of the Fraser. “It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” she assured, emphasizing that planning is already underway.
The current void of gynecological cancer surgeons in Fraser Health, which serves over 2.2 million British Columbians, has drawn criticism from health advocates. BC Conservative health critic Anna Kindy stated, “If we lose someone like Dr. Dhillon, it’s going to be difficult to get someone of his quality.”
Dr. Dhillon’s departure underscores a growing concern regarding healthcare equity in the region. “People shouldn’t have to travel for care, especially after receiving a devastating cancer diagnosis,” he remarked. The emotional toll on patients and their families cannot be overstated, highlighting the urgent need for accessible specialized care.
As the Fraser region continues to grapple with healthcare shortages, Dr. Dhillon’s move to Ontario serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing both healthcare professionals and patients in British Columbia. The province is facing a critical moment where action is needed to retain talent and provide adequate services to its residents.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions about expanding gynecological oncology services. For now, Dr. Dhillon will embark on a new chapter in Ontario, while patients in Fraser Health are left to navigate a fragmented healthcare system.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the implications for patients and healthcare services unfold.
