B.C. Lions Face Montreal Alouettes Amidst Season Challenges

URGENT UPDATE: The B.C. Lions are gearing up for a critical matchup against the Montreal Alouettes this Saturday, August 15, 2025, at B.C. Place Stadium. With the Lions currently at 4-5 and fresh off an overtime victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, every moment counts as they strive to overcome self-inflicted obstacles and climb the West Division standings.
Quarterback Nathan Rourke has emphasized the need for the Lions to eliminate mistakes that have cost them in close games. “I really feel like for this team, throughout the entire year, the only people really who can get in our way are us,” Rourke stated. The Lions have struggled with penalties, recording eight penalties for 65 yards last week, alongside a fumble and an interception.
First-year head coach Buck Pierce expressed optimism, stating, “I think I’ve seen some growth… we need to just continue to lift the group up.” His focus is on learning from past games and ensuring the team is prepared to seize this opportunity against the Alouettes.
The Alouettes (currently 5-4) are also looking to rebound after suffering a narrow 23-22 loss to the Edmonton Elks, marking their second consecutive defeat. They will be relying on third-string quarterback Caleb Evans, who hasn’t started since July 25, 2024. Evans, who is 6-10 in his first 16 CFL starts, is stepping in after both Davis Alexander and McLeod Bethel-Thompson were placed on the six-game injured list.
Alouettes head coach Jason Maas remains confident, noting, “We’ve won games with backups… that’s all I need to see.” With Evans at the helm, the team aims to secure their first win against the Lions since September 9, 2022.
The Lions previously edged out the Alouettes in their first meeting of the season, clinching a 21-20 victory thanks to a last-minute field goal from Sean Whyte. Rourke reflected on that game, stating, “We got away with one… but ultimately, I know for me, I’ve got to play better.”
Looking ahead, both teams face unique challenges. Montreal has been exceptional at limiting opponent run games, allowing only 4.4 yards per attempt this season. Meanwhile, the Lions are eager to break a three-game home losing streak, a situation they haven’t faced since 2021.
As kickoff approaches, fans can expect a highly competitive game filled with intensity as both teams look to stake their claim in the CFL landscape. The Lions will aim to showcase their growth while the Alouettes seek to regain momentum and assert their strength.
