Basilica Heritage Foundation Rebrands Amid New Community Vision
UPDATE: The Basilica Heritage Foundation has officially rebranded as the Cathedral Basilica Foundation, marking a significant shift in its mission to open the iconic Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to the public. This announcement, made by Executive Director Maria Conkey, comes as part of a bold new vision to enhance community engagement and expand the site’s cultural role.
The foundation, which acquired the historic Basilica for over $3 million in June 2022, solidified its ownership of the entire Basilica complex in April 2024. Conkey stated, “We have transitioned from preserving the building to actively operating it,” highlighting the need for a name that reflects this new operational role.
The newly named Cathedral Basilica Foundation aims to transform the area west of the Basilica, currently known as the Palace Commons, into a vibrant community hub. “We are looking to open that historic space to community groups, arts organizations, and musicians,” Conkey emphasized. “Our goal is to create a dynamic center at the intersection of Military Road and Bonaventure Avenue.”
As part of its mission, the foundation plans to enhance tourism opportunities through innovative programming, including digital signage and youth tour guide positions. Conkey stressed the importance of collaborating with the Basilica parish, saying, “We have an incredible working relationship with the Basilica parish. We are constantly exchanging ideas and collaborating.”
This name change signifies not just a rebranding but a commitment to making the Basilica a focal point for arts and culture in St. John’s. Conkey expressed a strong desire to enrich the visitor experience, saying the foundation is “working to partner with different groups here in the city and the province” to ensure tourists have a unique and engaging experience.
In the coming months, watch for more updates on the foundation’s initiatives aimed at expanding its programming and services to the community. With this exciting new chapter, the Cathedral Basilica Foundation is poised to make a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador.
