UPDATE: BC Hydro has issued a critical warning as it prepares to significantly increase the spill from the Comox Dam late Wednesday evening. The flow into the Puntledge River will surge from approximately 40 m3/s to 100 m3/s, posing serious risks to public safety ahead of anticipated heavy rains on Thursday and Friday.

The utility company advises everyone to stay clear of the river’s banks as elevated water levels are expected to remain hazardous through the end of the day on Monday, October 27, 2023. Residents and visitors near the river are urged to heed safety signage that will be installed along the river to indicate the elevated flow conditions.

Karla Louwers, public affairs coordinator for BC Hydro, stated, “The increased spill is a precautionary measure in response to the forecasted heavy rainfall. We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping a safe distance from the river during this time.”

Authorities report that inflows are expected to remain above normal into next week, with the potential for flow adjustments ranging between 50 m3/s and 100 m3/s, depending on actual precipitation amounts. As heavy rains approach, the situation remains fluid, and BC Hydro will continue to monitor conditions closely.

The Comox Valley area is no stranger to severe weather, and with the potential for high inflows, residents are reminded to take precautions. Flooding can occur quickly in these conditions, leading to dangerous currents and unpredictable water levels.

BC Hydro is committed to ensuring public safety during this time. They will provide updates as necessary, and residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions and river levels.

As the storm approaches, be sure to share this urgent message with others in the area. Stay safe and stay clear of the Puntledge River until conditions stabilize.
