BC Rivers Day Kicks Off 45th Year with Major Events Sept 28

UPDATE: BC Rivers Day is set to make a significant impact across the Kootenay and Okanagan regions this fall, with a series of community-focused events from September 19 to October 2. As the event celebrates its 45th year, local organizations are mobilizing for river cleanups, guided paddles, and exciting fish festivals.

This year’s festivities, coordinated by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC), encompass over 55 events aimed at connecting communities with their vital waterways. The main celebration occurs on Sunday, September 28, with diverse activities spread across municipalities, conservation groups, and Indigenous organizations. “BC Rivers Day reminds us that rivers connect everything in our province, from mountains to ocean,” stated Louise Pedersen, ORCBC’s executive director.

Key highlights include the Community River Day at Confluence Park in the Kootenays on September 21, running from 1 to 5 p.m. PDT. The Elk River Alliance is organizing three river cleanups in Sparwood, Elkford, and Fernie from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 28. Additional activities include a cleanup at Barbara Ann Park by the Grand Forks Community Trails Society from 1 to 3:30 p.m. the same day.

Over in the Thompson-Okanagan region, the Shuswap Children’s Association will host a weekend camping event near the Shuswap River from September 19 to 21. The Okanagan Science Centre in Vernon will offer gold-panning sessions on September 27, while the Adams River Salmon Society runs events at Tsútswecw Provincial Park on September 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BC Rivers Day, first initiated by river conservationist Mark Angelo in 1980, has expanded globally since becoming World Rivers Day in 2005, now celebrated in over 100 countries. This year promises to be a landmark celebration, emphasizing the importance of protecting our rivers and engaging communities in sustainable practices.
