BC Youth Rugby Teams Triumph at Canada Summer Games 2023
UPDATE: BC’s youth rugby teams achieved remarkable success at the Canada Summer Games, securing a gold medal for the girls U18 team and a silver medal for the boys U20 team. The tournament took place from August 11 to 13, 2023, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the results are making headlines across the nation.
The U18 girls team delivered an extraordinary performance, going undefeated throughout the tournament and celebrating their second consecutive gold medal victory. Notably, two athletes from the team, Ayana Titifanua of Langley’s Rugby Club and Tayla Kempf, a student from D.W. Poppy Secondary School, played pivotal roles in this outstanding achievement.
In the pool stages, the girls dominated their opponents, winning decisively against Newfoundland & Labrador (41-0), Alberta (31-7), New Brunswick (24-7), and Nova Scotia (29-10). They continued their winning streak by blanking Prince Edward Island 40-0 in the quarter-finals. Despite facing a challenge from Nova Scotia in the semi-finals, Team BC emerged victorious with a 29-12 win.
The gold medal match saw an intense battle against Ontario, where BC initially trailed 10-0. However, Kempf spearheaded an impressive comeback, leading her team to a stunning 22-10 victory that secured the championship.
Meanwhile, the BC boys U20 team also displayed commendable skill and determination, clinching a silver medal in their division. Their performance throughout the tournament showcased the depth of talent within BC rugby.
These victories not only highlight the incredible athleticism of these young players but also inspire future generations to engage in the sport.
