UPDATE: The Ben Stelter Foundation is urgently raising $1 million for an advanced cancer treatment facility through its ongoing Ben’s Cup hockey tournament, which concludes on July 11, 2023. With just two days left, the foundation is $250,000 shy of its goal and remains confident of reaching the target by the tournament’s end.

Over 900 young players from age groups U7 to U13 are competing at the Ardrossan Recreation Centre, contributing to the cause through their participation. Proceeds from the tournament, including a silent auction, will help fund the construction of a $150 million proton beam therapy center in Edmonton. This advanced treatment is not currently available in Canada, making it a critical need for families facing cancer.

Dustin MacMillan of the Ben Stelter Foundation emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We feel pretty confident we can get there, but obviously getting some more donations in, and getting people into the facility and really seeing the atmosphere.” The emotional connection to this initiative runs deep; the facility aims to provide treatment that could have significantly improved the quality of life for Ben Stelter, who tragically passed away from brain cancer at age 6 in 2022.

Canada is the only G7 country that does not offer proton beam therapy, a fact highlighted by MacMillan. He noted, “The quality of life after this treatment, especially in sensitive areas, is very impactful.” The foundation is calling on the community to rally together and show their support before the tournament concludes on Tuesday night.

As the tournament progresses, the atmosphere remains electric, with families and supporters coming together to champion this vital cause. The Ben Stelter Foundation is determined to turn the momentum into success, and every donation counts.

Stay tuned for updates as the tournament reaches its final moments, and join the effort to bring life-saving cancer treatment to Canada. Share this urgent news and help spread the word to make a difference!
