Billionaire and Dr. Oz Urge Action as Edgewood Ostrich Cull Looms
URGENT UPDATE: Major developments are unfolding in Edgewood, B.C., where uncertainty grips the Universal Ostrich Farm as owners face the imminent culling of nearly 400 ostriches. This drastic action follows the birds testing positive for avian flu last winter, and their fate is now in the hands of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
At a press conference on Monday, billionaire and U.S. radio host John Catsimatidis, alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz, voiced their concerns and urged Canadian authorities to allow further testing of the ostriches. “We’re here because we’re concerned about these iconic, ancient animals,” Catsimatidis stated, emphasizing the need for more research rather than destruction.
Farm co-owner Katie Pasitney expressed her distress, stating, “I don’t wish this on any farmer, nor any Canadian citizen. It’s been anxiety, fear.” Her plea reflects the emotional toll this situation has taken on the local community.
Despite the birds showing no symptoms for over 200 days, the Federal Court of Appeal upheld CFIA’s decision, asserting that their actions are essential for protecting public health and minimizing economic impact on Canada’s poultry industry. However, Catsimatidis and Dr. Oz argue that these ostriches might hold critical insights into avian flu resistance and should be studied instead of culled.
Dr. Oz has even proposed relocating the birds to his Florida ranch, where they could be researched further. “We have an incredible opportunity to advance science,” he stated. “These birds were able to withstand a potentially deadly virus. Why would we throw away that unique insight?”
The farm is now scrambling for an emergency stay order while exploring options to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Legal fees have already soared to approximately $35,000 USD, all covered by Catsimatidis as part of his commitment to save the flock.
The situation at Universal Ostrich Farm has garnered international attention, highlighting the clash between agricultural regulations and animal welfare. As this urgent situation develops, the fate of these ostriches remains uncertain, with advocates imploring for a reconsideration of the culling decision.
Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds. The call for action resonates not only in Canada but also across borders, as the implications of this case could influence future approaches to animal health management globally.
