Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Sets Hits Record Amid World Series Heartbreak
UPDATE: In a bittersweet moment for Toronto Blue Jays fans, Ernie Clement has just set a new record for the most hits in Major League Baseball’s post-season history, achieving 30 hits during the 2025 playoffs. However, the celebration is overshadowed by the Blue Jays’ heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7, where they fell 5-4 in a dramatic 11-inning showdown on November 1, 2025.
Clement’s record-breaking performance included going 3 for 5 at the plate, surpassing the previous record of 29 hits held by Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays since 2020. Despite this historic achievement, Clement expressed his deep disappointment in not securing the championship title, emphasizing his bond with teammates over personal accolades.
In an emotional post-game interview, Clement, still in uniform and visibly shaken, stated,
“I don’t really care about it, I just love every single guy in here so much. The only thing I can think of right now is spending this last night with all the boys. I’m just going to miss them in the off-season.”
His heartfelt sentiment resonated with fans, highlighting the camaraderie that defined the Blue Jays’ season.
Clement’s journey to this moment has been a testament to resilience. Drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Indians in 2017, he has faced numerous challenges, including time spent in the minor leagues and being designated for assignment. After being picked up by the Blue Jays in March 2023, he has transformed into a key player, appearing in 157 games this season and earning nominations for a Gold Glove award.
Throughout the playoffs, Clement showcased remarkable talent, hitting an impressive .411 over three rounds, with a home run, six doubles, and nine RBIs. His overall performance in Toronto has been substantial, with a lifetime average of .276, including 22 home runs and 111 RBIs in his three seasons with the team.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Clement’s contributions, stating,
“Unbelievable run that he was on this entire post-season. He’s turned himself into an everyday Major Leaguer that is going to contribute to win a world championship.”
Schneider’s words amplify the impact Clement has made, shifting from a waiver-wire pickup to a beloved and vital part of the Blue Jays.
As fans reflect on this season’s highs and lows, Clement’s record may soon be overshadowed by the collective hopes of the team. The Blue Jays are left pondering what could have been, while Clement prepares for an off-season that will no doubt be filled with fond memories of his teammates.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jays will regroup and focus on what’s next for the franchise, while Clement’s remarkable achievements will remain a bright spot in the team’s storied history.
