Blue Jays’ Jose Berrios Sparks Controversy with Candid Comments
UPDATE: Tensions rise within the Toronto Blue Jays as ace pitcher Jose Berrios candidly expresses his frustration over his recent removal from the starting rotation. On September 25, 2023, after being placed on the injured list, Berrios openly addressed his performance and the reasons behind the team’s decision during a locker room interview.
Berrios stated, “It was tough, to be honest, it was tough… I think the guys that are starting right now are pitching better than me.” His comments come amid growing scrutiny of his relationship with the Blue Jays following General Manager Ross Atkins’ remarks about Berrios’ absence during critical postseason moments.
Atkins revealed that Berrios “was not happy” about losing his rotation spot, and described the situation as a tough moment for the seasoned pitcher. “Being away from the club was his decision… but he handled it well,” Atkins said. This stark shift from earlier statements regarding Berrios’ need to be with family raises questions about the dynamics between the player and the organization.
As the offseason progresses, the Blue Jays have signed Dylan Cease and are finalizing a deal with Cody Ponce, adding further complexity to Berrios’ future with the team. Amid speculation, Atkins emphasized that the Blue Jays “certainly intend for him to be here moving forward,” but acknowledged the emotional strain of not being in the rotation.
With a 4.06 ERA over 30 starts this season, Berrios struggled in his final outings, posting a dismal 5.37 ERA over his last 13 games. The pitcher, who has been sidelined with right elbow inflammation for the first time in his decade-long career, stated he was performing at “maybe 80, 90%.”
“This year so far for me has been really tough,” Berrios admitted. He highlighted the challenges of adjusting to the injury and the subsequent impact on his performance. As he resumed throwing on October 19, ahead of the ALCS Game 6, Berrios was seen celebrating the Blue Jays’ victory over the Seattle Mariners but could not return for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Atkins reassured fans that Berrios is “very good” health-wise and has recovered well, but the uncertainty surrounding his emotional and professional standing with the team remains. With the offseason in full swing, all eyes will be on how the Blue Jays navigate this complex situation and what it means for Berrios’ future.
As developments unfold, the urgency of Berrios’ comments signals potential turbulence ahead for the Blue Jays. Fans and analysts alike are left pondering what this means for one of their key players as the team gears up for the next season.
