Boaters Unite Across Salish Sea to Foster U.S.-Canada Friendship

URGENT UPDATE: A unique event, Hands Across the Water, is set to unfold from September 19-21, 2023, as over 100 boats are preparing to unite across the Salish Sea in a symbolic gesture of friendship between Canada and the United States. This groundbreaking initiative aims to ease rising tensions and celebrate shared cultures.

Beginning on Friday, September 19, a flotilla of American boats will depart from Orcas Island, Washington, heading north to meet a Canadian flotilla sailing south from Salt Spring Island. The two groups will converge near the international border, exchanging greetings of goodwill and camaraderie. The official meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Welbury Bay, weather permitting.

Lyle MacWilliam, co-founder and former MP, emphasized the event’s purpose: “We want to make abundantly clear that this event is not a political protest. Our vision is to meet as neighbours and friends who have long shared common histories and interests.” The event seeks to highlight the rich connections between the two nations amidst current challenges.

Following the flotilla’s meeting, a formal greeting ceremony will take place at Centennial Park in Ganges, featuring presentations from high-profile officials, including Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson and B.C. Premier David Eby.

Tickets for the three-hour cruise are available for $150, allowing attendees to participate in this historic celebration. The boat will leave Ganges Harbour at 3 p.m. to join the flotilla.

In addition to the water activities, the weekend will be filled with cultural, social, and sporting events designed to strengthen community ties and promote a “synergistic and beneficial future,” according to MacWilliam. Excess funds raised will be allocated to charitable organizations throughout the regions.

Jason Roy Allen, president of the Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We’re thrilled to welcome our neighbours from Orcas for a weekend of friendship and festivities.”
