UPDATE: A daycare in Brantford has officially reopened just days after a dead bat found inside the facility tested positive for rabies. The alarming discovery occurred on August 11, when the deceased bat was located in a room for preschool-aged children at Creative Minds Daycare.

Following the initial find, a live bat was also spotted flying in a stairwell, prompting an immediate response from health officials. The daycare was closed as a precautionary measure, with an email to parents emphasizing that the facility would remain shut until all necessary cleaning and safety measures were fully implemented.

On August 13, lab results from Grand Erie Public Health confirmed the bat’s rabies status. The daycare’s owner, Vicky McNabb, stated, “We will not open until we are confident that the centre is completely safe for all children and staff.”

Wildlife experts, including Bill Dowd, CEO of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, inspected the premises to seal potential entry points and remove any contamination. Dowd explained, “A bat only needs an opening the size of a dime,” indicating the ease with which these creatures can infiltrate buildings.

After extensive modifications and thorough inspections, Dr. Jason Malenfant, acting medical officer of health, confirmed that all public health inspections and infection prevention criteria were met, paving the way for the daycare’s reopening.

Despite the successful reopening, some parents expressed concerns over communication following the rabies discovery. McNabb acknowledged the need for improved communication, calling it a “learning process” for the daycare.

Parents of children who attended the daycare are advised that some are receiving precautionary rabies treatment. While the overall risk in the region remains low, health officials urge vigilance due to several rabies-positive bats identified in the area.

Rabies is a dangerous viral infection that can be fatal if untreated. However, early intervention can prevent severe outcomes. As parents and caregivers navigate these developments, health officials encourage them to stay informed and proactive regarding their children’s safety.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of swift communication and action when it comes to health and safety in childcare settings.
