UPDATE: The Village of Burns Lake is set to make a significant decision regarding local housing as the First Reading of the Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1102, 2025 will occur during the Council Meeting on January 13, 2025. This urgent amendment proposes to increase the maximum density from 60 units per hectare to 74 units per hectare and adjust minimum floor areas for one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.

This critical move aims to facilitate the construction of a much-needed seniors’ housing apartment building, complying with BC Housing standards for density and unit size. The proposed site is located at 405 8th Avenue, covering approximately 0.5 hectares (1.235 acres). By allowing more units on the property, the village hopes to address the growing demand for senior housing in the area.

Residents who believe their interests may be impacted by this proposal are encouraged to act quickly. Written submissions can be sent via email to [email protected], by mail to PO Box 570, Burns Lake, BC, V0J 1E0, or delivered in person to the municipal office at 15 3rd Avenue. To ensure consideration at the meeting, submissions must be received no later than January 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM.

For those interested in reviewing the proposed bylaw, copies and relevant information can be inspected at the municipal office during regular business hours, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional details will also be made available online at https://www.burnslake.ca/community/news.

This zoning amendment marks a pivotal moment for Burns Lake as it seeks to enhance housing options for its senior population, reflecting a growing trend towards accommodating the needs of an aging community.
