UPDATE: The Burton Cummings Theatre in downtown Winnipeg has achieved a stunning attendance record in 2025, drawing 90,355 paying fans to concerts, comedy shows, and various events, despite ongoing economic pressures on the live entertainment industry. This milestone, reported by Pollstar, highlights the theatre’s resilience and popularity, significantly outpacing attendance at larger venues like Toronto’s Massey Hall.

The theatre, owned by True North Sports and Entertainment, hosted a record 115 events this year, with 27 sellouts. Venue director Ruben Ramalheiro emphasized the diverse programming that appeals to a wide range of audiences, stating, “We try to punch above our weight class with the artists that we get.”

According to Pollstar, the Burton Cummings Theatre now ranks No. 92 in the world’s busiest theatres, solidifying its place as a vital hub for live entertainment. “It’s a very expensive beast to operate, so hats off to them for making it go, especially in the post-pandemic era,” said Stephen Carroll, music programming director for Manitoba Film and Music.

The theatre, originally opened as the Walker Theatre in 1907, has a storied history shaped by renovations and ownership changes. Ramalheiro noted that True North has invested approximately $3 million into revitalizing the venue, enhancing its sound system, seating, and overall atmosphere.

Despite its rich history, the theatre is not without its quirks. Recently, an incident involving a ghostly encounter was reported when guitarist Cesar Soto of the band Ministry claimed to have seen an apparition in his dressing room. “Nobody is supposed to be in this building,” Ramalheiro recounted, adding to the theatre’s intriguing lore.

Upcoming events in 2026 include the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and performances by popular artists such as Dean Lewis and Rise Against. As the theatre continues to thrive, it remains a beloved venue for both local and national acts, carving out a unique niche in Winnipeg’s cultural landscape.

As attendance records continue to soar, the Burton Cummings Theatre stands as a testament to the enduring power of live performance, engaging audiences year-round and contributing to the vibrant arts community of Winnipeg.
