Calgarians Scale Calgary Tower, Surpassing Fundraising Goal
UPDATE: Close to 100 climbers tackled all 802 steps of the Calgary Tower on Saturday, October 14, 2023, raising over $40,000 for children in need. The event, hosted by staff from Emily Follensbee School, aimed to support the Canadian Angels Foundation, a charity founded in memory of Connor Vanderveen, who passed away in 2011 from Hunter Syndrome.
Participants put on their climbing shoes to honor Connor’s legacy and contribute to a cause that resonates deeply with his family and the Calgary community. “We wanted to share that with the people in Puerto Vallarta who have nothing,” said Connor’s mother, Geraldine Vanderveen, in a live interview with CTV Calgary. The foundation aims to provide essential resources and support for children with special needs in the Puerto Vallarta area.
This year’s climb surpassed its initial goal of $25,000, with donations continuing to pour in as Geraldine announced an ambitious new target of $50,000. “Let’s do all we can to help the kids in the Puerto Vallarta area,” she stated. Donations are still being accepted until midnight tonight, making this an urgent call to action for the community.
The Canadian Angels Foundation was inspired by the Vanderveen family’s experiences during Connor’s illness, which led them to spend significant time in Mexico. As they witnessed the lack of resources for children there, they felt compelled to help. The organization recently celebrated a major achievement by relocating the Pasitos de Luz program to a new 20,000 sq. foot facility, dramatically expanding their capacity to assist children.
As the community rallies around this cause, the emotional impact is evident. Climbers shared stories of Connor and the importance of creating a lasting legacy that supports vulnerable children. The event not only raised funds but also built camaraderie among participants, highlighting the spirit of giving within the Calgary community.
Stay tuned for more updates as donations continue to come in. For those wishing to contribute, visit the Canadian Angels Foundation’s website before the midnight deadline. This heartfelt initiative showcases the power of community and the enduring impact of one young boy’s legacy.
