Calgary Coffee Prices Soar as Global Costs Spike Urgently
UPDATE: Coffee prices in Calgary are surging as local roasters and importers grapple with unprecedented cost increases. Just announced data reveals that the average consumer price for 340 grams of coffee in Alberta has skyrocketed from $6.62 in June 2024 to $8.77 in June 2025, leaving consumers feeling the pinch.
Local coffee experts describe the situation as a “wild roller-coaster” of price fluctuations, primarily driven by severe climate impacts in Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer. “Brazil sneezes, and the whole world gets a cold in coffee, and Brazil started feeling terrible,” stated Carlos Gutierrez, the owner of Single Origin Coffee. Drought, frost, and hail have devastated Brazilian crops, with experts warning that recovery could take up to two years.
The implications are dire. Russ Prefontaine, president of Fratello Coffee Roasters, noted that the U.S. tariffs on coffee-producing nations like Vietnam, Brazil, and India are further complicating the supply chain. “We’re still in a shortage of coffee, recovering from the frost and the drought,” he said. “What this is causing in the market is general uncertainty. So people are scared.”
These soaring costs mean coffee retailers cannot absorb price hikes of 50 to 100 percent in just six months. “It has to be passed along when we get hit with price increases. This isn’t something we can absorb, and it happens so quickly,” Prefontaine stressed.
Statistics Canada confirms that this year’s coffee harvest is expected to be below average, raising fears of continued high prices. “If the price stays high, we’re going to buy very high. And the problem is not going to be solved immediately,” Gutierrez added.
Despite these challenges, coffee consumption in Canada remains robust, with an estimated 75 percent of adults drinking coffee daily, according to the Coffee Association of Canada. The enduring love for coffee among Canadians highlights the emotional impact of these price increases, as many face difficult choices at the grocery store.
As the situation develops, consumers can expect ongoing price volatility. Coffee lovers in Calgary and beyond are urged to stay informed and prepared for further changes in the market. The coffee community is feeling the pressure, and it’s clear: the grind is getting tougher.
