Calgary Faces Heat Wave; Severe Thunderstorms Loom Wednesday
URGENT UPDATE: Calgary is bracing for a significant weather shift as a heat wave grips the region today, with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 28 C. This hot and humid trend will be sharply interrupted tomorrow, as severe thunderstorms are expected to roll in.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, a dominant ridge of high pressure is fueling this heat in southern Alberta and British Columbia today, driving temperatures into the high 20s and low 30s. British Columbia, including Vancouver and much of the island, has issued heat warnings due to the rising temperatures.
While Calgary enjoys a sunny Tuesday, the calm will be short-lived. A low-pressure system moving south from the north will bring cooler temperatures and increased instability starting late Tuesday. Thunderstorms are predicted to develop in central Alberta, with heavy rainfall expected overnight in the capital region.
The most critical development arrives on Wednesday afternoon, when the QEII corridor from Calgary to Red Deer is likely to experience the onset of scattered severe thunderstorms. This weather event occurs as cooler air from the north collides with the hot, humid air from the south, creating the perfect conditions for severe storms.
“If these storms develop, we could see large hail, intense rain, lightning, and strong winds, including possible rotation due to wind shear,” warned meteorologists.
As the storms move quickly, they are expected to intensify and spread into central and southern Saskatchewan by early evening. Residents are advised to stay alert and monitor local weather updates as conditions evolve.
Following this drastic weather change, Calgary can expect a drop in temperatures, with highs around 18 C on Thursday and Friday. However, a more stable weather pattern is anticipated for the end of the weekend, extending into the middle of next week.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation as authorities continue to monitor the severe weather threat.
